[Greet in Thai – the right way!]
You must’ve seen this gesture when in Thailand. But did you know it varies depending on the seniority of the person whom you’re greeting? Take notes so you know what to do next time you’re in Thailand!
1. Greeting people of the same seniority
Modern-day greetings among young people have become more casual, but if you want to stick with tradition, press your palms together in front of your chest and raise your hands up to your neck, followed by “Sawadee krap/ka”. There’s no need to bow among friends!
2. Greeting people with seniority
When it comes to greeting your parents or boss, a proper salute is in order. Press your palms together in front of your chest and slowly raise them to the tip of your nose as you bow.
3. Greeting monks
Monks are honoured in Thailand, so they must be greeted with the utmost respect. Press your palms together in front of your chest and slowly raise them to your eyebrows as you bow.
You won’t be ever accused of impoliteness now that you know all the proper greetings!
